Time for a PS3 Price Cut

March 24th, 2009

Pulled (ever so gently) from Ars Technica:

Sony has been adamant not dropping the price, and with good reason. The hardware is still expensive, profits are down, and any hint of a price drop could stall sales leading up to the official announcement. Sony has instead been fighting the battle through PR, arguing that with the features of the PS3—including the Blu-ray drive and multimedia functions of the system—the price is more than justified. Sony also pointed out how many games you could buy with the money saved by not subscribing to Xbox Live, as its own online service is free.

I’m just a poor, lowly Wii owner so take my opinions on this with a grain of kosher salt. I pretty much agree that 2009 will be a bad year for Sony if they keep the price of their system where it is. Sure, you get a Blu-ray player and a blowjob with the $400 price tag, but it’s harder to justify the purchase in these times of financial burden, especially when you can get eyegasms with the 360 for half the price and cutegasms on the Wii for even less.

BFD that their online play is free. So is the Wii’s online capabilities. And people ARE willing to pay for the LIVE membership, so all Sony is really doing there is pointing out another means of income that they’re neglecting.

But like I said, I’m just a lowly Nintendo fanboi. I may have a slight bias that shapes the way I’m going at this whole issue. Agree with Ars’ sentiments? Think I’m just blowing smoke out my ass? Comment or e-mail, suckahs!

I Want My Branding Back!

February 11th, 2009

Maybe I’m just starting to show a bit of my age (I’m 21, so there’s not much age to show just yet), but I really miss a lot of the old branding of yesteryear. Like iPod? No thanks. I want my Walkman. I even prefer the name “walkman” to the Zune! I had two Walkmans in my life, one was a tapedeck, which I loved. I played my KoRn “Life is Peachy” and Third Eye Blind tapes on there ALL DAY LONG. Then middle school happened and I graduated to a cd player and I jammed out to CSNY and Stray Cats till I dropped. But now I have the iPod and the Zune. Neither of which really appeal to my ear. What gives, Sony?

I also miss my Gameboy. Nintendo DS? Fuck you. I want my damn Gameboy back! When I hear “Gameboy,” I know exactly what to expect: the best damn portable gaming experience EVAR. I raked leaves for three weeks just to make the cash to buy my Gameboy Color when I was in 8th grade. Then came the Gameboy Advance and suddenly my sister had this…DS Lite. WTF? No, Gameboy was so apropos! It told you exactly what you were getting into.

So Sony, Nintendo — especially you, Nintendo! — I miss my branding. I want my Walkman and my Gameboy. Give them back to me!

Episode 4: PUPPIES!!!

November 12th, 2008

Shownotes:

We have reached a great turning point for our nation. This will be reflected upon as the day when everything changed in the world as we know. Today is the day…Mike hosts the Geek Troika podcast! Dun dun DUN!

  • Jon introduces us to the mess around Sony “moderating” (deleting with extreme prejudice) levels generated by LittleBigPlanet users.
  • Mike poses the question: are we too focused on being unfocused? If you believe a Lord Chief Justice from England, then the answer is yes. The GenTechers (We need an adverb to address ourselves by) do some deep soul searching to find an
    answer.
  • Mattie points out that the new Flu Trend Watcher from Google, that big lovable corporation we all know so well is in fact trying not to be evil.
  • Matt regales us with the departure of David Tennant from Doctor Who, and poses the question of which sci-fi shows the GenTech crew would like to see rebooted in some shape or form. Not among the properties nominated: Star Trek or Star Wars, or anything with a “Star” prefix.

Our picks of the week:

Mike - 99 Bricks, an addictive flash game: http://www.kongregate.com/games/WeirdBeardGames/99-bricks

Jon - Raptr, a social network for gamers: http://raptr.com/

Mattie - PUPPIES!: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/shiba-inu-puppy-cam
