Finally, Someone Heard Me!

February 5th, 2009

You may remember that we had a discussion awhile back about mature titties..er..titles coming to the Wii via Sega, and the potential onslaught of games geared more toward the intermediate to hardcore gaming crowd. You may also remember that I made a little Calacanis’esque statement suggesting that this would be the year of the third-party developer and that the success of Nintendo in the new year would rest on them. Well, it would seem that a few people in the right places got wind of my sentiments (blatant lie unless these people had used a time machine to go into the future to hear my statements) and created a new game for the Wii that I’m actually kind of stoked for: Onslaught.

Okay, you can stop laughing now.

Seriously. Stop it.

Can I finish?

Ahem. Basically, Hudson Entertainment is making what they boast to be the first cooperative FPS to grace the Wii. That’s probably true, given that Nintendo has been seriously lacking in the FPS department. Sure, there are FPS games for the Wii out right now, but none of them have been all that great, nor have they included anything that would really count as “fun” cooperative play. If this game is anything near what the developers are boasting it is, then we Wii (teehee) owners are in for a treat. And while it may not change the way most gamers look at the Wii at this point, Onslaught sure seems like a step in the right direction. What do you think? Yay? Nay? Don’t care? E-mail or comment.

My Experience With Fallout 3

December 1st, 2008

I’ve been playing Fallout 3 for a few days now. I’m a slow player. I like to take my time playing through games. I’m definitely not the person you’d expect to finish a game in a weekend.

I’d been pretty vocal about not wanting to play Fallout 3. I’m not a big FPS fan. I still play them, but it isn’t my preferred style of gameplay. I’m a huge RPG fan (especiall JRPGs). I like the strides RPGs have made in combat, so it’s not the FPS games are too “quick” for me. I just prefer a meaty story and having something to really follow along and immerse me in this new world I’m supposed to be a part of. Half Life and Bioshock did this amazingly. I was instantly sucked into the worlds of those games and wanted to continue just to find out what would happen next.

Most FPS games don’t really have that aspect for me. So I lumped Fallout 3 in that group and chose to avoid it until several friends began to sing it’s praises. So I went and got the game and started playing. I’ve definitely not been sucked into the world of Fallout 3, though I can see how someone who enjoys FPS games would be. It’s a beautiful game and is really well done.

It’s just a great game I can’t get into. It’s not for me. I can appreciate the graphics and what little bit of the story I’ve seen, but it’s just not my game. Have any of you had similar experiences with supposedly great games?
