You Have No Right To Read This Aloud!

Here’s a shocker: someone is pissed at new technology.

They don’t have the right to read a book out loud,” said Paul Aiken, executive director of the Author’s Guild. “That’s an audio right, which is derivative under copyright law.”

The Crunch Gear article I linked to above pretty much admonishes Paul and others of his kind to go after piracy where it counts–wholesale book piracy in China–and I heartily agree. Considering that Audible is owned by Amazon and that this would technically be them pirating from themselves, I don’t really see what the big problem is here. Maybe someone can enlighten me, but I’m thinking that this is just another person overreacting to what I’ve always considered a fun and quirky technology.
