It is with great sadness that I inform you that I’m leaving Geek Troika. I had a great run these past 20+ episodes and the journey was nothing short of epic, but time constraints and personal matters have played a big part in my decision to go. I wish all the best to Mattie and Mike and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for the podcast in the future.
As always you can find me over at my blog, as well as the other podcast I started up awhile back. You can even find me and hassle me over at friendfeed too, which is shaping up to be a much better place to hang than twitter. Anypoo, thanks for making Troika an awesome experience for me and I hope to see you all around the net! Peace!
Just read about Geocities and it’s iminent demise. As someone who learned most of his HTML and even started his webcomic through the service, it kind of pains me to see the service go. I remember tweaking my Geocities site during study hall in high school while the others around me tried to either do their homework or tried to circumvent the firewall (our study hall “teacher”) to watch hentai.
Granted, it makes sense that the service is on the way out given the current state of the social web. But I definitely feel the need for a moment of silence for the place where I started on the web.
Okay.
Do any of you remember your old Geocities sites and or the urls that you had? Please share if you do! Or did you use any of the competing services? I remember having accounts with Geocities, Homestead, and Angelfire. Ahhh, those were the days. Web 1.0
Every now and then I’ll read these blog posts about the many uses of one product or another and without fail there’s always one or two uses that spark my interest. Such is the case with vodka. Apparently, you can use it for more than getting trashed at that lame Halloween party your friend invited you to. You know, the friend you don’t really talk to anymore? Divine Caroline has the full list, but I thought I’d share a few uses of vodka that I found the most interesting:
1. To remove a bandage painlessly, saturate the bandage with vodka. The solvent dissolves adhesive
7. Spray vodka on vomit stains, scrub with a brush, then blot dry.
9. Add a jigger of vodka to a 12-ounce bottle of shampoo. The alcohol cleanses the scalp, removes toxins from hair, and stimulates the growth of healthy hair.
11. Pour one-half cup vodka and one-half cup water in a Ziplock freezer bag and freeze for a slushy, refreshable ice pack for aches, pain or black eyes.
18. Soothe a sore throat. Add a tablespoon of vodka to glass of warm water and gargle. The alcohol helps numb the sore throat.
Although, just plain drinking it works too. Cheers.
Not all twitter celebrity shit stinks, as evidenced by Hugh Jackman’s 100k donation to one twitterer’s non-profit of choice. They just have to convince him why their charity is worth the money in 140 characters or less and blah blah blah and…
Zzzzzz.
I’m all about the charities and giving away large sums of money to a cause, but my cynical self doesn’t see this as much more than a publicity stunt the likes of which we just saw with Ashton Winfrey. I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one getting sick of the twelebrity surge, nor am I the only one spending more and more time on Friendfeed because of this. Thoughts? Concerns? Lack of concerns? Let me know…
All my gripes with the Wii and it’s poor third-party titles aside, the trailer for the Wii version of Ghostbusters looks kind of fun. Granted, it’s only a trailer and the game itself is not being made by the same company making the spiffier, more “next-gen” version, so I’m not 100% convinced this won’t completely suck balls. But hey, maybe hell will freeze over and this game will rock.
*sigh*
Who am I kidding? Ghostbusters: The Game is another title that makes me want to trade in my Wii for a 360.
This job sounds just too good to be true, but apparently you can get paid to drive an ancient automobile, scare the shit out of train passengers, and essentially tell people to “git off mah lawn!”
“We need someone to be the new Wolfman,” said Carol Govoni, who is organizing a Wolfman job fair on Saturday. “On the exterior, he must be rather unkempt and scruffy, but most important, he has to connect with kids.”
Boing Boing has video of what the position entails. This appeals greatly to the hermit-in-training in me. I’ve already got the smelly and grumpy thing down pat!
While we don’t have a new episode for you folks today, we do have some new stuff to tell you about, which our esteemed Jon does very eloquently. Isn’t he just the coolest thing ever?
This is the sentiment expressed by Congressman Eric Massa, who promised to introduce a bill that would make the internet “fair.” Ars has the write up on this and goes into more detail about the bill itself as well as the current situation with the cable companies rolling out their test caps to varying cities. As someone who has two companies to choose from and doesn’t blow a whole heck of a lot of bandwidth on the day-to-day, I’m not all that concerned yet about these increasing roll-outs. What bothers me is that those people who only have one choice for their cable and internet needs will in the end get fucked over by this, and which is why a “Broadband Internet Fairness Act” sounds like a pretty rad idea.
For those of you stuck with one choice only, what are you going to do when these caps start affecting you? Do you even think this is worth losing sleep over? Would you in fact go back to DSL or dial-up if you could? Feel free to spread the paranoia in the comments below!
I must admit something that could make you think less of me as a geek: I’ve never seen Buffy the Vampire Slayer before this year.
Gasp.
Well, that’s not necessarily true. I’ve seen the occasional episode here and there, and been forced to watch key episodes out of context, but I never actually sat down and gave the series a chance until this year. Long story short: I loved it. The characters, the writing, the plot, the monsters, the Alyson Hannigan, etc. Film execs must feel the same way as I do, because there’s wind of a Buffy movie in the future. Sarah Michelle Gellar seems on board, and that’s pretty much where the rumor train stops.
I guess my only question is whether or not a new film is really needed. While I love the show greatly, there was never really a time where I felt a lack of closure, or a need to see the continuing saga of Miss Summers. It’s pretty much the same feeling I have about any attempts to revive Firefly that pop up every year or so. These stories had some pretty decent closure for me, so I don’t really understand what more could be done with these characters. And what’s to say that the new film would even capture the spirit of the show we all know and love and, you know….be good?
I could be full of shit, though, and we could be in for the greatest film EVAR. Feel free to tell me this via e-mail or comment below.
Once again, apologies for the delay. It’s all just a big plot to keep you the listener wanting more Troika goodness. We have a great episode lined up for you today full of AJAX, Jesus, and E-Penises. It’s sure to please!
