You Have No Right To Read This Aloud!

February 12th, 2009

Here’s a shocker: someone is pissed at new technology.

They don’t have the right to read a book out loud,” said Paul Aiken, executive director of the Author’s Guild. “That’s an audio right, which is derivative under copyright law.”

The Crunch Gear article I linked to above pretty much admonishes Paul and others of his kind to go after piracy where it counts–wholesale book piracy in China–and I heartily agree. Considering that Audible is owned by Amazon and that this would technically be them pirating from themselves, I don’t really see what the big problem is here. Maybe someone can enlighten me, but I’m thinking that this is just another person overreacting to what I’ve always considered a fun and quirky technology.

The problem is that blind people should not be able to use this new technology! They should have to buy the special audio versions for blind people, sanctioned by the Author's Guild! Damn blind people always trying to screw over the authors! This calls for a strike!
  • It's true. Blind people have no rights in this world until the Author's Guild explicitly provides them.
  • It's the policy of the Author's Guild to deny the existence of blind people. :P
