I Want My Branding Back!

February 11th, 2009

Maybe I’m just starting to show a bit of my age (I’m 21, so there’s not much age to show just yet), but I really miss a lot of the old branding of yesteryear. Like iPod? No thanks. I want my Walkman. I even prefer the name “walkman” to the Zune! I had two Walkmans in my life, one was a tapedeck, which I loved. I played my KoRn “Life is Peachy” and Third Eye Blind tapes on there ALL DAY LONG. Then middle school happened and I graduated to a cd player and I jammed out to CSNY and Stray Cats till I dropped. But now I have the iPod and the Zune. Neither of which really appeal to my ear. What gives, Sony?

I also miss my Gameboy. Nintendo DS? Fuck you. I want my damn Gameboy back! When I hear “Gameboy,” I know exactly what to expect: the best damn portable gaming experience EVAR. I raked leaves for three weeks just to make the cash to buy my Gameboy Color when I was in 8th grade. Then came the Gameboy Advance and suddenly my sister had this…DS Lite. WTF? No, Gameboy was so apropos! It told you exactly what you were getting into.

So Sony, Nintendo — especially you, Nintendo! — I miss my branding. I want my Walkman and my Gameboy. Give them back to me!

They still have the Walkman! http://tinyurl.com/cwo6s6

Oh and I love and still love the first two Third Eye Blind CDs. I remember playing them in high school (I'm oldddd) while beating Final Fantasy VII for the five hundredth time. Nothing better than Jumper while kicking some polygon ass!
  • It sounds like we had the same FFVII/3EB experience...

And oh my gosh, there's a walkman! Now where are my commercials with the big headed blue alien walkman!? WELL!?

I think they went the same way those cool old Sega commercials did...extinct. Unfortunately.
  • I could get with the DS - Nintendo would stick with a model - 1st half this year they plan to drop the DSi in the USA (finally). Also the console's name officially refers to "Developers' System", in reference to developers of new game designs the system was meant to inspire, and "Dual Screen", the system's most obvious and distinct feature.

  • I love the new gadgets, but I do miss the old ones. One thing I do miss about tapes and cds was making my own mixes for people. I don't do that anymore because I now have an Ipod. I could create playlists, but it just doesn't have the same taste as giving someone a physical cd or tape.

    Now I am reminiscing. .......
  • I definitely still make mixtapes but they usually end up being playlists I send to people. Which is okay. It doesn't feel exactly the same as when I waited tirelessly next to the radio for THE song to come on so I could press record, but I still enjoy developing the greatest set of songs to be grouped together in the known universe. I actually post links to a lot of my mixes on Friendfeed. (Drop.io FTW!)
  • You definitely have an ear for the mixes, that's for sure! I liked the latest one, btw....unless that one I downloaded from your Drop.io wasn't the latest...
